There is a particular kind of gift in a Bank Holiday weekend.
Not the kind that needs filling. Not the kind that requires a plan, a reservation, or a carefully organised itinerary. Just time. Unhurried, unscheduled, yours.
And yet so many of us arrive at a long weekend and immediately begin filling it. We catch up on things left undone. We make plans we do not particularly want to keep. We move through the extra days at the same pace as the ordinary ones, and wonder afterwards why we do not feel restored.
Rest is a skill. And like most skills, it takes a little intention to do it well.
Rest is not the absence of doing. It is the presence of being, fully, beautifully and without apology.
For me, resting well starts in the morning. It begins with not rushing to get dressed. With choosing something soft and beautiful rather than just practical. With creating the conditions for a slow day rather than waiting for slowness to arrive on its own.
Something warm draped over your shoulders before breakfast , a soft wrap, a favourite layer ,is a small act that carries a quiet message: today is different. Today has a different quality. Today belongs to you.
This is the wellness practice that often goes unspoken ,not the structured ritual or the expensive treatment, but the ordinary moments in which we choose to treat ourselves with care. What we wear at home, on the slow days, is part of that. More than we tend to acknowledge.
The natural fibres in alpaca wool are temperature-regulating and extraordinarily soft, perfect for days that move between indoors and out, between a morning at home and a gentle walk. There is no itch, no heaviness. Just the quiet comfort of something made well, worn with ease.
A Bank Holiday intention worth keeping
This weekend, or for any of the upcoming weekends (it doesn't have to be a bank holiday!) I want to suggest something simple: dress the day as if it matters. Not formally but beautifully. Choose the piece that makes you feel most at ease in your own home. Make the slow breakfast. Take the unhurried walk.
Rest is not a reward for working hard enough. It is a practice that deserves the same care and attention you give to everything else.
And it is worth dressing for.
