The Luxury Secret: Why Alpaca Almost Never Needs Washing

One of the most extraordinary, and least expected, qualities of alpaca fibre.

We want to let you in on something that surprises almost everyone the first time they hear it.

Your alpaca wrap almost never needs washing!

This isn't a care shortcut or a corner being cut. It's one of the most genuinely remarkable properties of alpaca fibre, and understanding it will completely change how you think about and care for your wrap.

Why alpaca is different

Most natural fibres ,wool, cotton, cashmere , have microscopic scales on their surface that trap moisture, bacteria, and odour over time. It's why a wool jumper can smell after a long day, and why most fabrics need regular washing to stay fresh.

Alpaca is different. Its fibre is naturally smooth, which means it simply doesn't hold onto odour in the same way. It also has extraordinary breathability as it wicks moisture away from the body rather than absorbing it and a natural thermal regulation that keeps it feeling fresh wear after wear.

For most of our customers, a full wash is something they do perhaps once a year. For some, even less.

What to do instead

Between wears, your wrap benefits from something wonderfully simple: fresh air. Hang it near an open window or outside in mild weather for an hour or two, and it will feel completely renewed.

A gentle shake removes surface dust. A soft brush , the kind used for cashmere, can restore the pile if it ever flattens slightly. And that, for the vast majority of wears, is genuinely all it needs.

When washing is necessary

There will be occasions, of course, when a wash is called for. A spill. A long journey. A particularly muddy adventure. In those moments, here is what we recommend:

Hand wash only, in cool water with a specialist wool and delicate fibre wash. Never wring, press gently to remove water and lay flat on a clean towel to dry, reshaping as you go. Keep away from direct heat and never tumble dry.

Treated with this care, your wrap will remain as soft, as beautiful, and as vibrant as the day it arrived,  for years, and quite possibly decades.

The deeper benefit

There is something rather lovely about owning a piece that asks so little of you. In a world of endless maintenance, of things that wear out and fade and need constant attention, an alpaca wrap simply endures.

Less washing means the fibres stay intact longer. The colours remain rich. The drape stays perfect. And you spend your time wearing it, rather than caring for it.

That feels like luxury to us.
