Can I picture it working with at least three things I already own?
Not "could" in a stretch, imagine-hard kind of way. Genuinely, easily, without effort, three existing pieces it would sit happily alongside. A jumper, a skirt, a coat you already reach for.
If you can't name three, put it back. It's not a considered piece. It's a impulse wearing the costume of one.
This isn't about buying less for its own sake, though that's often the result. It's about buying on purpose. Every piece earning its place because it multiplies what you already have, rather than sitting alongside it in isolation.
Why This Matters More With Investment Pieces
The better made and more considered something is, the more it should be doing for you. A limited edition piece made from fine alpaca wool, produced in small runs, meant to last for years rather than a season. That's not a piece you want stranded in your wardrobe, worn twice and then forgotten because it never quite paired with anything.
